While the gun issue heats up in Washington, many state leaders are preparing to protect the rights of their citizens. Georgia’s leaders, for example, are proposing new laws which would give more rights to gun owners in the state. President Obama is calling for gun reform which would restrict the Second Amendment rights of each and every American citizen. A proposed Senate bill would bring about the reform that the president seeks by expanding an assault weapons ban from the 1990s. But in Atlanta, the capitol of Georgia, lawmakers are looking to expand the rights of gun owners instead. In the meantime, gun sales are on the rise as store owners have a difficult time keeping up with the demand for their products.

According to a report from WRDW TV in Augusta, Georgia, business is booming at area gun stores. Ray Reynolds from United Loan and Firearms stated, “The supply is almost non-existent. We spend hours a day shopping online for guns from vendors.” Their business has seen a 75% increase in gun sales in the last 60 days. Obama’s attempt to stifle the rights of gun owners has lead to an incredible increase in gun sales. WRDW reports that gun manufacturers are also enjoying a boost in business. They are said to be on an 18 month backlog, and are struggling to make enough guns to satisfy the demand. A record number of citizens are also signing up for gun safety classes.

In the midst of the debates of Congress on whether or not citizen should be able to own what they are now calling “assault rifles,” Georgia’s lawmakers are fighting to have less gun control. Two Senate bills, numbers 93 and 101, would allow silencers for hunters and give those who live in public housing the right to own a gun. Neither of these are currently legal in the state. These lawmakers are also seeking to expand on current laws to allow more citizens who hold out of state licenses to carry their weapons in Georgia.
