Obama’s State of the Union Speech was full of talk on jobs, the economy, and promises to bring home 34,000 of our troops from Afghanistan in 2013. He insisted that we can rebuild the wealth of America by rebuilding a “thriving middle class,” and yet he has done nothing but work hard to destroy it ever since he took office.
According to the POTUS, efforts to grow our economy and create good jobs for the middle class should be the “North Star that guides our efforts.” Haven’t we heard all of this before? If only he would take his own advice.
Obama also spoke of an Energy Security Trust which would create as many as 15 government innovation labs as well as private and public partnerships to help push new job growth through ideas such as 3D printers. He promised that three new manufacturers would be opening soon. Michelle Malkin called it “Solyndra on Steroids.” Oh! And Apple will soon began manufacturing Macs in the US again!
The President spoke out against North Korea for their recent nuclear test and once again asked that nuclear stockpiles all across the globe be cut back. A declaration which was expected in the State of the Union was overshadowed by this test, as many believed Obama planned to speak out in favor of cutting America’s own arsenal.
Of course, gun control came into the speech.“The families of Newtown deserve a vote” on gun legislation. Obama said, as do other communities “ripped open by gun violence.” (USA Today) A cop who was wounded in a mass shooting at the Sikh temple several months back was invited to the event, likely in an effort to push the President’s stance on gun control. Obama still wants “universal background checks.” (Of course.) “If Congress won’t, I will” is his take on the matter.
The speech went on and on (and on) and was basically a rerun of Obama speeches gone past. He wants to raise minimum wage to $9 an hour. While many minimum wage workers will love this idea, it is not a great one. ObamaCare has already caused so many small businesses to fall, or cut back, that raising the minimum wage can only do more harm.
The POTUS also promised more transparency…..we can only assume that he does not mean on Benghazi. After that tragedy and scandalous cover-up, he actually had the nerve to state, “As long as I’m Commander-in-Chief, we will do whatever we must to protect those who serve their country abroad, and we will maintain the best military the world has ever known.” He had the nerve to speak out about the right to vote….after so many of our military members were denied that right when their absentee ballots ether never arrived or blew up in a plane crash. The speech would have been laughable if the State of Our Union were not so serious. At one point, Obama even said, “I recognize that in our democracy, no one should just take my word.” No worries there, Mr. President. We are waking up, and learning better.
